It’s 7:30 pm Wednesday evening and everyone is scuffling around the dining room table. It’s the first time we have seen each other since the morning rush through car loop. How was your day? What were your sugars? Homework questions, dinner burning on the stove, renew prescriptions, fieldtrip form to sign for school, did you check your blood sugar? dance recital forms, feed the dogs, look up carbs for chili that’s burning on the stove, make that last work phone call that couldn’t fit in earlier today because school nurse called…blood sugar was high, call dog sitter, pack carb counting book, honey do you have that new application on your itouch?…..the clock is ticking, its approaching 10:00pm, one more thing to fit in…what was it, Oh yes, PACK for the last minute family trip!!!
This was a sample from the events that took place the evening before our 3 day getaway this past week. Preparing to pack and travel for vacation is stressful enough a midst the business of life, but doing it last minute definitely throws you a curve ball! There are so many details related to pump supplies, injections, meter and strips, syringes, back up insulin, Glucagon, glucose tabs, and the list goes on and on! It certainly has gotten better over the years, and as our daughter gets older she is well versed in the “what to bring” list. When she was younger and we were newly diagnosed, however, it could be a bit overwhelming. JDRF has a great travel checklist for kids, so they can help be part of the packing process: Travel Checklist.
With the help of iphone/itouch applications, dining out on the trip went smoother than ever (application “Nutrition”). Our daughter has been using her itouch to log blood sugars and insulin dosing using an application called “Wave Sense” (the iphone logging application we also like is called “Blue Loop”). I still like to have the“Calorie King” pocket carbohydrate counter in my purse…the old school way!
T1DE had a great meeting this past February, even though it was a small group due to Super Bowl Sunday! We missed seeing our families that were unable to attend and hope to see you all again at the March 4th meeting. Thank you to Erin and our kids for hosting a Valentines Month dessert bake. The kids were busy preparing treats in the kitchen and working together to count carbohydrates. We hope to use the kitchen at Mountain View in the future to try out various low carb recipes.
We are big fans of Top Chef Sam Talbot, http://www.samtalbot.com/, he has a web site and new diabetic cookbook “The Sweet Life” that might provide some inspiration. Here is a great diabetes blog with fun low carb (3 grams per cup) Valentine’s Day treat: It is fun for the kids to help make!
We are planning our social event in March for our families to have fun together in addition to our monthly meetings! Bring your activity ideas to the next meeting and the group can determine a day that would work for most. Some activity suggestions include ice skating, bowling, rock climbing, etc. Please email Erin any suggestions in the meantime: erinlynn.email@gmail.com.
We plan to have a speaker for the March 4th meeting: Katie with Animas. Katie will be discussing “Advanced Pumping/Dosing”, including some carbohydrate counting information. Thank you to Erin Barbolla for arranging for arranging this! Also we will be having our core support discussions for the adults and activities for the kids.
Don’t forget to visit T1DE’s web site: www.T1DE.org! The tech staff is further tweaking the website and forum, so we can exchange ideas and support on various topics. If you have problems registering, please let us know.
Most importantly, be on the look out for families to introduce to our group! We expect our group to really grow this year. We think that T1DE is shaping up to be a great resource for the community.
Here are some great resources on the web and be sure to check out the last link: Diabetic Barbie!
